Following the events from the defeat of the Irish forces at Kinsale up to the death of Donal in Spain.

Written as an historical novel the book gives a vivid picture of what followed after Donal O’Sullivan was appointed commander-in-chief of the Irish forces when O’Neill and O’Donnell abandoned the field of battle and went their separate ways, one returning to the north and the other seeking passage to Spain.

Despite the fact that the contents of the book are mostly factual and are gleaned from primary sources many of the O’Sullivan clan find this history of their hero ‘too close to the bone’, especially two paragraphs that briefly depict sexual scenes. Everybody knows that the Irish chieftains, like the English Lords, took advantage of young women who dwelt in their confines and that they took cattle and women as prizes in tribal warfare.

This book gives a very vivid description of the epic march to Leitrim as well as many other events which have previously been omitted from accounts of what followed the battle of Kinsale.
